Industry Professionals Offer Support

Industry professionals take business students under their wings

Business professionals from across the North East came together to offer support to fledgling business leaders of the future.

As part of the first year of their business and professional studies course, students are matched up with a mentor who works in the career they wish to pursue. This employer engagement was organised as part of the Career Ready programme delivered by the College. Rebecca Cowan, Business Student, Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, said:

It was nice to meet Emma from Engie as she works in finance as a business analyst and I am eager to secure a career in this area. She offered me support on my course and creating a CV, which I can use for apprenticeship and job applications. I think the Career Ready Programme is really useful and it’s helping me to get ready for my future career. It’s great to have someone who is interested in helping me get off to a great start.

Karen McCartney, Career Ready Regional Manager, said:

It’s so rewarding to experience the buzz in the room when the students meet their business mentors for the first time. Mentors provide a real boost to the students’ confidence and development to help them get prepared for the world of work.

Queen Alexandra Sixth Form offers A Levels and Level 3 BTEC courses in a variety of subjects including business which is available at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College which is part of Tyne Coast College.

The College has worked with the Career Ready Programme for three years and has benefited from the extra opportunities which are presented to students who take part in this programme, including internships, apprenticeships and university offers. Lee Patterson, Head of Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, said:

The Career Ready Programme is a fantastic opportunity for our learners to understand the context of the work they are studying in classes. The Career Ready Programme adds value to our BTEC business qualification with students on the 90 Credit Diploma and Extended Diploma benefiting from an industry mentor and an array of engaging business opportunities.
