BTEC Business students visit local jewellery company

Last week, our BTEC Business Studies students visited a local company in North Shields called Emma Hedley.  This is a bespoke jewellery business owned and operated by two ladies – Kate and Emma.

On arrival, the students were greeted by Jeff from the Business Factory in North Shields which is an organisation that helps entrepreneurs and small business start-ups in the local area.

To start the day, our students were given a presentation by Jeff which covered the importance of unique selling points (USP) in business.  They were then set a short task of identifying the USP’s of Michelle Obama, Her Majesty the Queen and Simon Cowell.  Following this task, they then went on to identify their own UPS’s and then share them with the class in an open forum.

After a small break for hot chocolate and marshmallows courtesy of the Business Factory, our students received a presentation by Emma and Kate.  They detailed their rise from challenging beginnings and having to take on several jobs, to eventually reaching their goal of successful business owners.

The students hung on every word and went onto to ask intelligent and well thought out questions to Emma and Kate.  Even going as far as to engage with them towards the end of the visit to ask further questions about business.

These insightful visits are an important part of our studies within business as it not only allows our students to gain an understanding and knowledge of businesses within a variety of industries but also inspires them to achieve their goals.
