Level 2 Certificate in Art and Design Skills

The L2 Certificate in Art and Design Skills is designed to provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress in education or training in related subject areas, or to gain fundamental creative skills that are valued in other subject areas.  These skills include creative investigation and ideas generation, communication, using creative development processes, developing, and applying practical skills and using productive working skills and practice.  


The L2 Certificate in Art and Design Skills is highly practical, and all assessment is based on portfolio of work. Evidence for these portfolios is generated through practical projects, briefs, and workshops. 


What will I study?


You will develop skills in the following areas:

  1. image and mark 
  2. fine art and printmaking
  3. mixed media 
  4. digital photography, darkroom and alternative processes 
  5. graphic and digital communication 


Entry requirements


Minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above; or progression from a relevant Level 1 or Level 2 Art & Design qualification. A portfolio of supporting artwork is also required to show at interview.




You will attend regular tutorials at which you will present your growing portfolio of course work. This work will be reviewed and your achievements assessed and recorded. The emphasis is on practical work, built up through project assignments.


Progression & Careers


Progression routes are available through our Level 3 BTEC in Art & Design Practice (dependent on portfolio and interview), then option to progress onto HND, Foundation Degree or BA (Hons) Degree courses within a wide range of creative areas. Careers include: Fine Art, Concept Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Interior Design, Fashion Design.

Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College has made the A level grade once again – with virtually perfect pass rates.

Seventy-five students helped the North Shields college gain a stunning overall pass rate of 98.6%.

They include Lauren Collins, 18, from Howden, who has won a place at Cambridge University with 3 A* grades in law, psychology and history.

Daniel Blacklock, 18, gained A* in maths and physics, and Lauren Hallewell, also 18, achieved A* in law and business and an A in sociology.

And Max Ramage, 19, has won a place at Newcastle University after gaining A* in psychology and business and an A in maths.


New appointed head at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College

Cross-curricular expert Joanne Chadwick has been appointed the new head of Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College.
Joanne, 36, aims to continue the pursuit of educational excellence for school-leavers attending Queen Alexandra, one of England’s best performing sixth forms.
