Welfare & Financial Support

There’s money available for students who may need financial help with study costs as long as you attend college regularly and work hard.

See details below of our brand new scheme called Queen Alex Maintenance Allowance or QAMA, which has been set up by the College to help students facing financial obstacles.

Queen Alex Maintenance Allowance

Receive up to £1200* a year as a full-time student at Queen Alex Sixth Form College

Following the Government’s changes to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), Queen Alex Sixth Form College has created a new fund to help students facing financial obstacles and to demonstrate a clear commitment to supporting its learners with the costs associated with studying such as:

  • Travel costs
  • Equipment
  • Books and more

QAMA (Queen Alex Maintenance Allowance) is available to 16 - 18 year old full-time students taking AS or A2 subjects at Queen Alex Sixth Form College in North Shields.

Students who meet the eligibility criteria* could receive upto £1200 a year. This money could support you with the cost of books, equipment, learning materials, transport or any other costs associated with studying.

QAMA will be available to both new and existing students including those who are currently receiving full or part EMA and meet the eligibility criteria*. Even if you have been studying at a different college or sixth form, you could still be entitled to QAMA when you enrol at Queen Alex Sixth Form College.

To find out if you are eligible to receive support, contact the Gateway Team on 0191 229 5123 or enquiries@queenalex.co.uk

*We are currently awaiting full eligibility criteria from the Government, but will talk through opportunities available to you when you contact the Gateway team.

Student Welfare

From time to time we all have bad days and it seems impossible to juggle everything you have going on at College and at home. We offer a confidential counselling service that students can access on campus.
