Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College is the result of a collaboration between John Spence Community High School, Marden High School, Norham Community Technology College and Tyne Metropolitan College. These four institutions have come together to create a dedicated sixth form college that will serve the needs of their own students and those from other schools.

John Spence Community High School

John Spence Community High School is a comprehensive school in North Shields for students aged 11-16. With a strong reputation for social inclusion and sports, the school has around 900 students. Headteacher Jim Stephenson says of the school’s involvement with new sixth form college: “We’re committed to Queen Alexandra Sixth form College because we want to give our students a smooth transition into college life, which they will need to learn effectively and to grow as individuals.”

Marden High School

Marden High School in North Shields is a high-performing specialist school with English Literature, Media Studies, ICT, Graphics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology as its core subjects. Each year approximately two-thirds of the school’s students progress to A level study. David Stainthorpe, headteacher at Marden High School, said of Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College: “The new college will ensure the continuity of top quality learning experiences and allow students to take the relationships they have made with their teachers into their sixth form studies.”

Norham Community Technology College

Norham Community Technology College in North Shields is a specialist technology college with a strong curriculum focus on Maths, Science, Design & Technology and ICT as well as being a full service extended school with a strong track record in effective partnership working to ensure positive outcomes for young people. The college’s principal, Linda Halbert, is enthusiastic about the Queen Alexandra partnership. She said: “Students will enjoy the benefits of curriculum choice, whilst having the support, relationships with staff and liaison with parents offered by a school sixth form.”

Tyne Metropolitan College

Tyne Metropolitan College is the largest provider of further and Higher Education in North Tyneside and will bring a wealth of experience to the partnership. Jon Vincent, Tyne Metropolitan College’s principal said: “Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College will provide a cohesive learning experience for students, who will be assured of a smooth transition from GCSEs to a wide range of A level choices and an extensive enrichment programme.”
