Ross Wilson, 18, a former Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College and NESA student has accepted a full 4 year Basketball Scholarship at Rice University in Houston, Texas in the USA.
Ross, a former A Level student, left Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College last year having achieved fantastic A Level results.
Despite working extremely hard on his academic studies and achieving, an A Grade in Maths, an A Grade in PE and a B Grade in Biology, Ross managed to maintain his enthusiasm for basketball as a member of the North East Sports Academy (NESA).
As a NESA student member, Ross was able to access first class basketball coaching at TyneMet College's Coast Road Campus and his determination and commitment to basketball earned him a place on the Newcastle Eagles First Team. Ross's performance has gone from strength to strength making him an important player in the Eagles team.
Denise Bolton, Head of Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, said:
"I am absolutely delighted that Ross has been awarded this scholarship. He worked very hard to achieve excellent grades in his A level studies whilst also playing at the top of his basketball game, we wish him every success in the future!"
Mark McCutcheon, NESA Sport Co-ordinator, TyneMet College said:
"Ross has been an inspirational student and a pleasure to work with; this scholarship award is testament to the hard work and dedication that he put in to his academic studies and his enthusiasm and skill shown on the basketball court.
We have many NESA students who have gone on to play in regional and national teams and others like Ross who have been awarded scholarships or sporting excellence awards.
NESA students are totally supported by a team of NESA professional coaches so that students who are interested in following their sporting discipline are able to train to be the best that they can and can also take advantage of the opportunities that NESA can offer alongside their studies at College."
