The European Union and the current Euro crisis was the topic of a recent debate at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, where students gathered to listen to two invited speakers, Colin Moran, the Metric Martyr and Gordon Adam a former MEP, came along to put across two very different perspectives. Colin represented a Euro-sceptic view, whilst Gordon reflected a pro Europe outlook; both speakers were invited through the think tank Civitas. The audience, made up of A level students, listened to the reasoned arguments put forward by both speakers, who outlined a number of key points aimed at influencing the opinions of those present.
The debate was lively, and covered a range of contemporary issues. The voters of tomorrow, the students in the audience, were engaged throughout by Colin and Gordon, to the point where a number of them continued the debate with the speakers afterwards. Matthew Cook, currently studying A levels in English, Classics, History and Sociology impressed the invited guests with his level of political knowledge and strong opinions.
Britain and its relationship with the EU will continue to arouse plenty of discussion and the Queen Alexandra students who took part in this event will certainly be well informed enough to contribute and inform others following this event.
Denise Bolton, Head of Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, said:
“We will continue to hold debates and events like the one as it is important that the students get an understanding of current economic and political issues. We encourage students to take part in these events so that they can discuss first hand any issues or concerns for their future that they may have.”
