HND in Photography
Express your unique perspective, capture emotions and immerse yourself in the study of photography with this HND. Share your creative outlook with a university-level qualification in photography at the Creative Studios, on the College’s Queen Alexandra Campus in North Shields.
The Level 5 HND is a university-level qualification that provides greater breadth and specialisation than the Level 4 HNC. It is studio led and you will be given time and guidance to develop your own work and areas of interest.
The HND further details the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the photography sector and you will learn a number of skills that are required for the photographic industry.
Units in year one include:
- Visual communication in art and design
- Ideas generation and development in art and design
- Contextual and cultural referencing in art and design
- Digital media in art and design
- Studio practice in photography
- Darkroom practice in photography
- Photographic techniques
- Fashion photography
- Photographic materials, techniques and technology
Units in year two include:
- Professional practice in art and design
- Digital image creation and development
- Location photography
- Specialist practice in photography
- Project design, implementation and evaluation
- Management of art exhibitions
- Critical study in art and design
- Employability skills
Our typical offer is 56 UCAS points from a minimum of one A Level, or equivalent. (Read more on the new UCAS Tariff point system for 2017.) We accept 56 points from the following equivalent qualifications: Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate and appropriate BTEC Awards. We accept a maximum of 6 points from Level 3 Key Skills qualifications.
In addition to the above, we require three passes at GCSE Grade C or above, including mathematics and English Language. We will also accept equivalent qualifications such as a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number.
Teaching and assessment
The HND course is delivered through studio sessions with feedback and constructive critique, as well as through practical workshops, demonstrations, formal lectures, seminars, visits, and individual and group projects.
Progression & careers
This HND qualification equips you with a range of transferable skills including communication and analysis. These skills are valuable to many different types of employers who look for people with proven creativity and initiative. Progression from this qualification may be into or within employment in the photography sector, either directly on achievement of the award or following further study to degree level. You may also work towards membership of British Institute of Professional Photography.
